 Honoring History

Nearly 150 years has gone by since the passing of Civil War artillery hero Lt. Alonzo Cushing, but his valor and bravery during Gettysburg are now long but forgotten. The Associated Press reports Wisconsin citizen Margaret Zerwekh took interest in the heroic story of a Union artillery lieutenant born near her hometown and rallied for 23 years to instate a posthumous Medal of Honor in his name. Lt. Cushing died on the last day of the Gettysburg battle after continuing to lead and fight, following two hours of Confederate artillery bombardment and two gunshot wounds. After getting the attention of Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) and an Air Force pilot who created a Facebook fan site, the Army agreed to recommend the medal. Thanks to CannonArtillery.com member Col. (ret.) Jim Lincoln for sending us this story.
