The 9/11 National Training Center (NTC) Rotation Advanced Echelon (ADVON) from Fort Riley arrived Sept. 7, 2001. Main body was to fly Sept. 11-12, 2009. Flew Sept. 13-14 and was the only plane in the sky. Leaving the Topeka, Kansas airport our DC-9 hit a large bird, the right engine caught on fire, the plane fell and soldier's hearts fell. It leveled out and flew low to Chicago to get a new plane. Finally, we arrived at NTC. Operating Commanders said the President said we were at war; forget the NTC battle rhythm you know. This box is 21 straight days. We were even attacked as we took this photo op on the 21st day.

Unit Nickname: "DRAGON" - 1st Battalion, 117th Field Artillery. The dragon is our mascot. We used it to usher in our transition to MLRS several years ago, but it will serve us equally as well now that we're transitioning to the M198 (155mm-T) weapon system. The shield has the red and white St. Andrews cross (state flag of Alabama - we're an Alabama National Guard unit) and the crown symbolizing the "King of Battle". The jewels in the crown represent the trinity - the three windows in the tower from the Legend of St. Barbara and, of course, the lightning bolt crossing the face of the shield. Note the judicious use of "red" - the color of our branch.
